Ho fatto, ho detto: past participles that break the rule

Ho fatto, ho detto: past participles that break the rule

The most common verbs in a story about yesterday are exactly the ones whose past participle breaks the rule. There are fifteen, and you learn them as a list, like English taken and seen. The -tto group: fare → fatto, dire → detto, leggere → letto, scrivere → scritto. The double tt is heard and written. The -sto group: vedere → visto, rispondere → risposto, chiedere → chiesto. The -so group: prendere → preso, perdere → perso, decidere → deciso, chiudere → chiuso. The -erto group: aprire → aperto, offrire → offerto. And two special ones: mettere → messo (double s) and bere → bevuto. Careful: ho letto means “I read, I've read”, and il letto means “the bed”. They're different words spelled the same way. Common mistakes: • NOT “ho prenduto il treno” → ho preso il treno. • NOT “ha scrivuto a Silvia” → ha scritto a Silvia. • NOT “Che cosa hai facto?” → Che cosa hai fatto? • NOT “abbiamo beruto un caffè” → abbiamo bevuto un caffè.
