Lesson 6. Budem pracovať, nikto neprišiel: the future and double negatives
I can talk about my plans — what I'll do and where I'll go — congratulate someone, and say “nobody came, I'm not doing anything”.
Budem pracovať, nikto neprišiel: the future and double negatives
Budem pracovať, nikto neprišiel: the future and double negatives
When: plans and holidays. Time words: zajtra, v sobotu, cez víkend, v lete.
The future: budem, budeš, bude, budeme, budete, budú + the infinitive. Without an infinitive, budem says where you'll be: “V sobotu budem doma”.
This future is for a process: pracovať, robiť, čítať, bývať. English “will” goes with any verb, but Slovak budem doesn't: not דbudem kúpiť” but “Chcem kúpiť” or “Musím kúpiť”.
ísť has its own form: pôjdem, pôjdeš … pôjdu; never דbudem ísť”.
Double negatives: nikto, nič, nikdy + a verb with ne- joined to it. Unlike standard English, Slovak needs both negatives: Nikto nič nevie (nobody knows anything). You've already seen “Nikdy nefajčím”. Three more words: niečo (something), každý (every, everyone), všetci (everybody, all people).
Length ≠ stress: in budú the stress is on bu-; the long ú is just longer.
Common mistakes:
• דBudem kúpiť lístok” → “Chcem kúpiť lístok”.
• דBudem ísť do kina” → “Pôjdem do kina”.
• דNikto prišiel” → “Nikto neprišiel”.
The future: budem + infinitive and pôjdem
ísť has its own form: pôjdem, not ×budem ísť.
| Who | budem + infinitive | ísť |
|---|---|---|
| ja | budem čítať | pôjdem |
| ty | budeš čítať | pôjdeš |
| on, ona | bude čítať | pôjde |
| my | budeme čítať | pôjdeme |
| vy | budete čítať | pôjdete |
| oni | budú čítať | pôjdu |
Nobody, nothing, never — and something, everyone, all
With nikto, nič, nikdy the verb also takes ne-: unlike standard English, Slovak needs both negatives.
| Word | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| nikto — nobody | Nikto nie je doma. | Nobody's home. |
| nič — nothing | Nič nechcem. | I don't want anything. |
| nikdy — never | Nikdy nefajčím. | I never smoke. |
| niečo — something | Robíš niečo zaujímavé? | Are you doing something interesting? |
| každý — everyone, every | Každý tu hovorí po slovensky. | Everyone here speaks Slovak. |
| všetci — all (people) | Všetci spia. | Everyone is sleeping. |
