I can say what hurts and how I feel, understand the doctor's instructions, and say what needs to be done and what doesn't: Գլուխս ցավում է, Պետք է հանգստանալ.
What hurts: Գլուխս ցավում է
What hurts: Գլուխս ցավում է
“Hurt” is the verb ցավել, and the body part is the subject, as in English “My head hurts”: Գլուխս ցավում է. “My” is the ending -ս, “your” is -դ: Գլուխդ ցավո՞ւմ է. For someone else, the article: Հայկի գլուխը, նրա գլուխը.
If several parts hurt, the linking verb is են: Ականջներս ցավում են.
The doctor will ask: Որտե՞ղ է ցավում. In the answer the linking verb comes right after the answer word: Ոտքս է ցավում.
How you feel: Ինձ լավ եմ զգում, Ինձ վատ եմ զգում (“I feel well / bad”, with ինձ, “myself”). The question: Քեզ ինչպե՞ս ես զգում, formally Ձեզ ինչպե՞ս եք զգում.
“I'm cold” is a verb: Մրսում եմ (ցուրտ is for the weather). You “have” a temperature and a cough, as in English: Ջերմություն ունեմ, Հազ ունեմ.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Իմ գլուխ ցավում է” → Գլուխս ցավում է or Իմ գլուխը ցավում է.
Written ≠ heard: կոկորդ — written դ, heard [tʰ]; մեջք — written ջ, heard [tʃʰ]; առողջ — written ղ and ջ, heard [χ] and [tʃʰ].
Don't confuse: հազ “cough”, հաց “bread”.
Whose body part
“My” and “your” go at the end of the word; for another person, the article.
| Body part | Mine | Yours | His, hers |
|---|---|---|---|
| գլուխ | գլուխս | գլուխդ | գլուխը |
| ականջ | ականջս | ականջդ | ականջը |
| սիրտ | սիրտս | սիրտդ | սիրտը |
| ոտքեր | ոտքերս | ոտքերդ | ոտքերը |

What you need to do: պետք է
Պետք է + the dictionary form of the verb means “it's necessary to”, in general, without saying for whom: Պետք է հանգստանալ։ Պետք է բժիշկ Պողոսյանին զանգել։
“There's no need to” is պետք չէ + the dictionary form: Պետք չէ շատ աշխատել։
Don't add ինձ, քեզ or Ձեզ, even where English says “I need to” or “you have to”.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ինձ պետք է գնալ” → Պետք է գնալ.
Don't confuse it with needing a thing: Ինձ դեղ է պետք.
The doctor's instructions use the formal forms you know: Նստեք։ Եկեք ուրբաթ օրը։ Սպասեք, խնդրում եմ։
