I can say where I went and when I came back: I choose essere or avere and make the past participle agree with the subject.
Sono andato: the past with essere
Sono andato: the past with essere
Say where you went, when you arrived, and what time you got back.
Most verbs take the auxiliary (the helping verb) avere (lesson 3), but one group takes essere: verbs of movement and change of state. The list is closed: andare, venire, arrivare, partire, entrare, uscire, tornare, restare, rimanere, stare, essere, nascere, morire, salire, scendere, cadere. diventare and piacere work the same way. English uses have for every verb (I have gone); Italian doesn't.
With essere, the past participle agrees with the subject: Marco è andato, Giulia è andata, I ragazzi sono andati, Le ragazze sono andate.
English past forms never change; here the past participle agrees like an adjective (italiano, italiana).
Negative: Ieri non sono andato al cinema. Questions by intonation: Sei arrivato presto?
Now the set phrase Sono nato a Sydney (“I was born in Sydney”) makes sense: nascere takes essere, and a woman says Sono nata a Sydney.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ho andato a Firenze” → Sono andato a Firenze.
• NOT “Giulia è tornato tardi” → Giulia è tornata tardi.
• NOT “Le ragazze sono uscito” → Le ragazze sono uscite.
• NOT “Sono mangiato al ristorante” → Ho mangiato al ristorante.
