I can describe my home: which rooms there are, what's in them, which floor it's on; ask about an apartment (Is er een balkon?); and write a short listing.
My home: er is, er zijn
My home: er is, er zijn
To describe a house or an apartment — how many rooms, what's there, which floor — you need a few set phrases.
“There is / there are”: er is for one thing, er zijn for several, as in English. Er is een grote keuken. Er zijn vier kamers. Question: Is er een kast? Zijn er veel kamers? Negative with geen: Er is geen bed.
Floors: Dutch counts from de begane grond (street level), which a US building calls the first floor; op de eerste verdieping is the US second floor, op de tweede the third. The table is next to this text.
A compound word takes the article of its last part: de kamer — de slaapkamer, de woonkamer, de badkamer; de kast — de koelkast.
de bank here is a sofa. het huis — house, het appartement — apartment, de flat — apartment building (a word to recognize, not to use yet).
Common mistakes:
• ×Er is drie bedden → Er zijn drie bedden.
• ×het slaapkamer → de slaapkamer.
• ×Daar is een balkon (meaning “there is”) → Er is een balkon.
• ×Ik woon op de eerste verdieping (meaning the US first floor) → op de begane grond.
Floors
Dutch floors start from the begane grond: the US first floor is the begane grond, the US second floor is de eerste verdieping.
| In Dutch | In English |
|---|---|
| de begane grond | first floor |
| de eerste verdieping | second floor |
| de tweede verdieping | third floor |
| de derde verdieping | fourth floor |
